Located at shop 9/251 Parnell Road, this intimate and warm venue radiates a genuine Persian ambiance, complete with soft classic Iranian melodies that effortlessly transport diners to the rich cultural roots of the cuisine.
The menu at Rumi is a celebration of Persian culinary artistry, boasting kebabs and mains that promise to delight your palate. Standout skewers like the Momtaz Joojeh and Chenjeh plate offer a harmonious duet of flame-grilled tenderness and robust flavor, served alongside charred tomatoes, tangy onion sumac, and crisp pickles. For those who appreciate a symphony of textures and tastes, the Shamshiri skewer, combining Koobideh and Joojeh, is a must-try, delivering earth and sky flavors kissed by the grill.
Diners raving about their experience often mention dishes like the Fesenjoon With Zucchini, a luxurious stew where the sweet and tangy pomegranate blend with walnut and Persian spices to create an evocative story with every spoonful. The Zereshk Polo With Akbar Joojeh—a half chicken confit bathed in butter and served with vibrant barberry saffron rice and pomegranate sauce—is nothing short of a Persian masterpiece on a plate, marrying golden saffron and crimson-tinted jewels in perfect harmony.
The details extend to the accompaniments as well: the Zereshk Polo is sprinkled with ruby-red barberries that burst with sweet-tart vitality, and the freshly baked traditional Persian Barbari bread offers a warm, authentic touch. Each dish is thoughtfully crafted to offer not just nourishment but a vivid cultural experience.
What truly elevates Rumi beyond just a meal is the holistic dining experience. The saffron ice cream and baklava serve as perfect sweet finishes, complemented beautifully by cardamom tea that refreshes and cleanses the palate after each flavorful course.
While some visitors have noted that certain dishes can lean toward the pricier side, the overwhelming consensus is that the quality, authenticity, and warm hospitality justify the experience. The restaurant also caters to halal dietary needs, making it accessible and welcoming for diverse diners, including families with young children, who appreciate thoughtful touches like toys to keep little ones entertained.

First time having Persian food. I got the snapper dish . I rate it a 10/10! The saffron icecream and baklava was beautiful. The cardomom tea was yum. Great to have after the meal as it cleansed the pallet . Would recommend this restaurant to foodies who love great food for a reasonable price .

I’ve been to Rumi before, but I must say the food quality and taste have reached another level with the new chef. The difference is noticeable, every bite felt fresher and more authentic. The hospitality and customer service were also outstanding; the team truly made us feel at home. The ambience was warm and inviting, with a truly Persian feel, and the classic Iranian music created the perfect atmosphere to enjoy the meal. We ordered the Shamshiri and Momtaz, and both dishes impressed us with their taste and generous portions (enough to take some home, which was a bonus!). Rumi was the perfect choice to celebrate my friend’s new job, wonderful food, genuine hospitality, and an experience we’ll definitely return for.

This was one of the best Middle Eastern kebab I’ve ever had—the seasoning was spot on and it stayed really juicy. The only downside is the price; if the portion were a bit bigger and came with more veggies, it would’ve been perfect.

I feel a bit overpriced for the fish and prawn. It was around $40-ish. The owner is very friendly.

Really enjoyed my meal. The service was great, and they gave my baby a toy which means we were able to eat in peace! Halal too!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rated using my system: 5 stars means the place meets expectations and is worth recommending. Anything lower reflects notable issues. Rumi Restaurant in Parnell serves quality Iranian cuisine in a nicely presented space with a calm and elegant atmosphere. The food is authentic but with a slight Kiwi touch that makes it feel both familiar and unique. Their meat and other dishes are halal, and alcohol is also served on the premises, which works well for a wide range of diners. The kebabs, rice dishes, and stews are full of flavour and well-prepared. The dessert options like saffron ice cream and baklava are also worth trying. Service is friendly and professional, and the staff pay attention to detail. Prices are not cheap, but fair for the quality and setting. Overall, Rumi is one of the better options in Auckland for Iranian food. It’s a well-balanced mix of authenticity, good service, and a relaxed dining experience.

We had the Rumi special. It came with chicken, lamb mince and beef kebabs. The meats were super tender and flavourful. Would come again!
